Review: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

Links: Goodreads | Book Depository

I wish I could sum up this review by writing a big I DON'T KNOW across the middle. But I can't because a) that would make for a crappy review, and b) that doesn't make any sense.

But it's true, though. I don't know. I don't know how to feel about this book, how to review it, and more importantly, how to rate it. You see, The 5th Wave was my 2013 book. It was the book. I was so predisposed to love this book, that I let my hopes get way too high. I read the first 54 preview pages before the book came out, and I was hooked.

Sadly, things didn't go as expected.

My biggest problem with the book can be summed up in two words: Evan Walker. You see, the moment Mr. Evan was introduced, things starting to go down hill for me. He is a walking cliche. Good looks? Check. Weird attitude? Check. Lurking around Cassie? Check. Being a complete and total pushover? You guessed it.. check. For a guy that was supposed to be 18-19, he sometimes acted like he was 12. I can discuss freely what it is that got me mad at the existence of Evan Walker, but that would involve spoilers.

So spoilers it is...

Don't click on the spoiler unless you already read the book, or have no intention whatsoever of reading it.

On a more positive note, I really like Yancey's writing. It's simplistic, but it sounds exactly like how a sixteen year old girl would. Also, the way his sentences form themselves really builds up the suspense.

There are about a hundred other positive and rather gushing reviews of this book, like this or this, so I would advise you check them out first before forming an opinion. I really hate to be the black sheep out of all the positive reviews, but alas, it happened. I should add that apart from it's flaws, this is a pretty addicting book. The kind you might finish in one sitting. There's a lot of action and suspense that makes for an entertaining read.

  2. So basically it's almost like any other dystopian book? The second the guy is introduced, the book goes meh. I was really excited about this and I wilk read it but I think I'm gonna tone down the enthusiasm to avoid disappointment. And, damn it, I want to resd that spoiler! I give myself a day before I give in. Haha

  3. Not that it's helping, but I think the spoiler is longer than the rest of the review. I went a little crazy with my rant there.

The concept was really good, but the damn romance killed me. If you do read it, let me know what you think over twitter will you :)

  5. I've heard a lot of good things about this one, so sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. Sometimes it sucks to finish a book and just not know what to say, especially when everyone else around you is busy fangirling! I didn't read the spoiler because I'm not sure if I'll read the book or not, but I'm definitely curious...

  6. This is the second less-than-positive review I've seen for The 5th Wave this week. I'm starting to have doubts about this book now! Sucks that this one didn't work out for you, but I can see exactly why Evan bothered you. I'm so tempted to read your spoilers, but for now I'll refrain. >_<

  7. I loved The 5th Wave, but also have to agree with many of your points. I didn't have high expectations though, just picked it up on a whim. And I could feel the author "manipulating" me into loving his book and the characters, and yet I still ended up buying into it. I guess, I'm easily manipulated.

  8. Yeah, I'm pretty much the odd one out when it comes to this book, and so this was one of the hardest reviews I had to write. Especially when everyone likes it and you feel like you're being super critical, you know? :D

Well, I'd like to know what you think if you ever read it, Asti :D

  9. Hhehe, yeah it's probably a good idea that you don't. If I took Evan out of the equation, I'm pretty sure I would've loved this book, but that's just me. Others actually liked him.

  10. I'm really glad you liked this! I admit I'm the odd one out when it comes to this book. I think my high hopes kind of ruined the book for me, not to mention that I read a preview and was pretty much excited about it. Note to self: Don't be over excited about a book :P
